try placing "exec gnome-session" in your user's ~/.xinitrc

I'm having the exactly same problem with a Ge-Force MX440, with nv driver.

If I find out how to fix, i'll post here. Hope u guys help!

Do you have the proper syncs for your monitor? Have you tried using the vesa driver to see if it works?

I've tried either vesa and vga drivers, but none fixed the problem. It's always the same thing: The graphic interface starts, the mouse appears and suddently the screen becomes black and the mobo speaker makes 3 beeps, indicating that the computer entered the "suspended" state.
I'm starting to think it's something related to the GDM, but have no idea how to fix it...

do you know the horizontal and vertical syncs for your monitor? Those often lead to problems that result in no x server.

both vsync and hsync are just fine. I think it's hopeless, i'm going back to ubuntu!
