I can not remember which banshee package I was trying install. But just then I tried to install banshee using the instructions on this page http://banshee-project.org/Distributions/Ubuntu and it didn't work. I basically got the same command ouput as the previous time I tried.

You are using Debian Sarge and those installation's instructions are made for Ubuntu Breezy. It won't work like that.

You'll need to compile Banshee from source if you are to use it on Debian Sarge:
http://banshee-project.org/Banshee_Source

Though I really doubt it is easily doable, as the basic dependencies are way too recent compared to what Sarge has to offer:

I am using gtkpod on my ubuntu 6.6 for alternative of itunes

I use gtkpod on slackware here, as long as you setup hotplug/udev, the ipod will work fine.

used gtkpod for years with no problems

I just tried installing them both and this was the terminal output:
It's still the same scenario, I plug in the ipod and start up gtkpod and it doesn't display the contents of my ipod or any signs of even noticing my ipod.

its not as easy as just installing udev and hotplug, you have to configured and add a udev rule.

but you dont _have_ to

you should be able to use /dev/sda{1,2}, but I prefer using /dev/ipod{1,2} thanks to udev.

when you plug in the ipod, what does the 'dmesg' command say, at the bottom, it should claim a device, such as sdb/sda

plus, using a 2.4 kernel with hotplug and udev wont work.

Upgrade to a 2.6 series kernel first. Search for kernel-image-2.6 (apt-cache search kernel-image-2.6) and choose the appropriate image for your architecture. (I believe the 2.6 series kernel is kernel-image-2.6....Debian users correct me if I am wrong).
