TouchPad crashes

i'm having trouble with my HpPavillion dv5000 touchpad that crashes every now and then.
Are there some extra options i should include in the etc/X11/xorg.conf file?
I don't have a mouse connected at anytime. Thanks in advance.

Here are my mouse and TouchPad entries

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Configured Mouse"
Driver "mouse"
Option "CorePointer"
Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Protocol" "ExplorerPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection

Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Synaptics Touchpad"
Driver "synaptics"
Option "SendCoreEvents" "true"
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
Option "HorizScrollDelta" "0"
EndSection

In my /var/log/messages it says TouchPad: lost synchronisation at byte 1

ALSO occasionally when i log out/shutdown the screen goes all wavy and blurry, i can still use the mouse in this instance but everything on screen is doubled up. Is this an issue with ATI graphics card?
