What distro. do you have? There's a program called 'alien' that can convert .deb files to .rpm and a few other filetypes.
Or what program are you trying to install? There might already be a binary package for it (failing that, the source code).Registered Linux User #379728

installing from source codes work always... if you know how to do it...
.deb file should be installable in debian without any problem...

actually, i have compiled my own linux distribution from scratch,Welcome to Linux From Scratch!
and have got gui in it.
now i have failed to install dpkg package manager in it properly because of which it is giving me the error:dpk query:failed to opne package info file'\usr\local\var\dpkg\status' for reading.no such file or directory".
so i was thinking of taking the help of some other distro lke knoppix 3.8.2 live cd to install dpkg on my distro.
is there any way of doing it.
if there is then do tell me and if you have the soln to above problem then you can also tell me that.
