Most Linux distros have sloppy Wireless Support and most cards works in Ubuntu out of box. I would suggest you to try both. Installation takes only 20mins for each.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

runnning debian on my acer
i am running debian on my ACER laptop travelmate 4150 series .
it is working fine .
so there should not be issue with ur laptop.
i am getting one other issue , if someone can guide me into that .
i am compiling one tool on debia on my desktop which uses pcap .
it gives following error
/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lpcap
,can anybody tell wht is the issue even pcap libraries are installed on the system .
that i confirmed by doing following :
dpkg -l|grep pcap
rc libpcap0.7 0.7.2-7 System interface for user-level packet captu
ii libpcap0.8 0.9.5-1 System interface for user-level packet captu
what is this ii/rc stands for ?

why not wireshark?
If what you want is to do some packet capturing, why don't you use wireshark...
apt-cache search wireshark
and install the needed package...
btw, which application are you trying to install?
