    Question emu10k1 / Audigy 2 card on Asus A8N-e AMD64 mb

I too am having great difficulty getting an emu10k1 / Audigy 2 card recognized on an Asus A8N-e AMD64 mb. Dmesg says card not found,
I get a device not found error on boot. LSPCI shows:

05:06.0 Multimedia audio controller: Creative Labs SB0400 Audigy2 Value
Subsystem: Creative Labs Unknown device 4004
    Flags: medium devsel, IRQ 16
    I/O ports at a000 [size=64]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2

    lsmod shows:

    snd_emu10k1_synth 12160 0
    snd_emux_synth 40704 1 snd_emu10k1_synth
    snd_seq_virmidi 12928 1 snd_emux_synth
    snd_seq_midi_emul 11264 1 snd_emux_synth
    snd_emu10k1 143968 1 snd_emu10k1_synth

    snd_page_alloc 15504 2 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm
    snd_util_mem 9856 2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1
    snd_hwdep 15496 2 snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1
    snd_seq_dummy 8836 0
    snd_seq_oss 39296 0
    snd_seq_midi 13888 0
    snd_rawmidi 31520 3 snd_seq_virmidi,snd_emu10k1,snd_seq_midi
    snd_seq_midi_event 12800 3 snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi
    snd_seq 61056 9 snd_emux_synth,snd_seq_virmidi,snd_seq_midi_emul,s nd_seq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_seq_midi _event
    snd_timer 29448 3 snd_emu10k1,snd_pcm,snd_seq
    snd_seq_device 13460 8 snd_emu10k1_synth,snd_emux_synth,snd_emu10k1,snd_s eq_dummy,snd_seq_oss,snd_seq_midi,snd_rawmidi,snd_ seq

alsaconf correctly identifies the card but ends with this:

    Running update-modules...
Architecture-specific modutils configuration for x86_64 not found, using defaults
    Loading driver...
    Setting default volumes...
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device
Saving the mixer setup used for this in /var/lib/alsa/asound.state.
    /usr/sbin/alsactl: save_state:1254: No soundcards found...

    ================================================== =============================

Now ALSA is ready to use.
For adjustment of volumes, use your favorite mixer.

    Have a lot of fun!

I have installed from alsa source as well as 64 studio default installation plus nearly everything pertaining to alsa. Still nothing

Even the basic mixers crash, for example:

    64studio:/home/adw# amixer
amixer: Mixer attach default error: No such device

I'm at at standstill. I am running the latest 64studio with an emu1212m card which is the Audigy2 SB0400. Any ideas???

Judging from the utter lack of any semblance of a reply I must conclude I'm in the wrong forum. Any chance of a suggestion for a more appropriate forum?
