Looking for divine intervention
hi everyone,
I'm currently running a unit with 450 Mhz CPU : 128 Mb RAM : 32 Mb VidMem, and planning to run a web server(LAMP) for testing (only locally).
I'm looking for advise on the feasibility of this undertaking... if it's even possible at all.
I've already tried running Damn Small Linux and Debian with Gnome desktop on it and it seems to run just fine. ( btw, I'm surprised to find I didn't have any trouble using a serial mouse with DSL, and still sweating to configure the serial mouse to run on the Debian-Gnome )
Should I consider using a lower version like Debian 3.0 and the XFree86 counterpart of it?

Well, if you have no need for the gui, don't run it. If you do need a gui, you might try a lighter window manager (xfce4, fluxbox, icewm, fvm).

Thanks,
I was planning to run a browser on the same unit so GUI installation is a necessity. Think I'll look into xfce...

Your situation sounds similar to mine. I have an old P4 system where the processor isnt a big deal but it too only has 128MB of ram. Im running debian, apache2, php5, mysql and without a desktop environment, I use all but 18MB of RAM. Seems to be able to handle the loads I need it for, but I havent had a lot of time to test its capabilities.

I run Debian 4 on a similar machine. Intel Celeron 440BX at about 433MHz. I use it as a server. Nothing fancy, just a simple apache server with very little traffic. Hell, I'm probably the only person that visits the site. lol.
Anyway, I have 320 MB of RAM in my server and it runs Gnome just fine. I rarely ever use the GUI though, as the machine runs headless. Its main purpose is as an NFS server.

thanks for some input guys, anyway i'm setting up the test unit for system development... so i'm practically the only person to view it, and perhaps only locally for the meantime.
i saw how fast the unit responded to kde desktop envi... at it just kicks a..drenaline... anyway the xfce image was a bust, so i've had to set up on gnome
since you guys are on, would you mind telling me which cd number of the debian distro contains what i need to setup php and mysql?

Why not use apt-get or does the system not have an internet connection? The homepage to this site contains some helpful articles. This may help you.

yup, the biggest problem, no internet connection for the test pc...
i've tried wandering downloading packages, searching only by name... but still couldn't work it out, using XAMPP temporarily as a stop gap solution.( ongoing project in php-mysql-apache ).
seems to be working fine for now...
but can I send out a wish to you guys... if someone could provide some guide on how to install LAMP (via source) on a base installation debian, as well as manual installation of the desktop envi... anyway it's just a wish... that's something i really want to accomplish and see through for myself
