    Welcome to the forums, wolf71!

Yes, you can use dd, ghost4linux, clonezilla, partimage, norton's ghost, acronis trueimage, or one of several other cloning apps to create an exact image of your current partitions. If something should go wrong, you can restore the images in a few minutes and be right back to where you were before the mishap.

I do this all the time and it has saved me loads of time.

    Have fun with Linux...

I use Acronis TrueImage, but only because it's worked so well for the last 3 or 4 years. It can only be installed directly onto Windows, but it runs just fine off the CD, so it can be used equally well for working with Linux. I've never tried running it on Wine to see what would happen. I really need to get around to using some of the true Linux imaging apps, but my old version of TrueImage has never failed me (at least yet).

That said, I feel pretty certain that the other applications would do just as good a job.

I've been thinking that Mondo Rescue looks very interesting, so I'll probably try it in the near future.
