    can I shrink a raid5 partition?

I have a raid device which was initially setup with 8 devices, but one of the
drives seems to have a problem with the slot, so replacing the drive does not work. I would like to reshape the raid5 partition to use 7 devices. Is there anyway to do this?
Can it be done with a mounted partition?

    Thanks,

No, you will need to recreate the RAID using the remaining disks. If you continue on you must remember that you have already lost a disk and so parity has gone. Another failed disk and the array will fail completely.

I assume that if I recreate the array, I also lose the data, so I would
have to tar it off, recreate and untar; kind of tricky with an arrary
    holding the root partition!
