Lightbulb iBuild and my linux story (along with some questions)

    Hi,

I just thought that I would share a little history of my Linux experience...

I've used Windoze all my life, since DOS, through 3.1, 95, 98 SE, XP and Vista. I'm only 18 which tells you something at the age I was when I started tinkering with PC's. To all intents and purposes Windoze fulfilled my requirements but to be fair, I had never heard of Linux.

So, one day I found a Mandrake CD (2001) in my Dad's filling cabinet and I decided to try it...big mistake. It pretty much put me off Linux until September 2007 when I discovered Ubuntu. I had serious problems with it, from not being able to install to my hard disk unless I reformatted my XP CD (it was a SATA setting in my BIOS that needed changing). Then, it refused to install my Nvidia drivers and it all turned out to be a big mess.

However, I did meet a guy called Graham Armstrong (who contributed an article here). Basically he convinced me that by returning to the evil ways of Windoze because I would "fail in life." So yea, thanks to him me and Linux are like bread and butter. I've forced most of my friends to try out the LiveCD's and they love them.

So, that's my little story Now, for some questions...

    iBuild

Does anyone have an alternative download link to it? I keep getting a 500 internal server error...

iBuild is based on Debian so I know that .deb packages will install. Question is, if I installed Synaptic package manager, can I add ubuntu repo's to the Sources list? I do realise that dependencies must be satisfied for me to install software from them.

How could I go about implementing full disk encryption with iBuild? Ubuntu alternative CD handles it perfectly...

So yea, if you can help me I would be very grateful

    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

far as i know you can't mix ubuntu and debian sources without causing havoc.

    Great :/

Yea, I was about 5 when I started messing with them. Taking a trip down memory lane, I loved to read a book and then type it out on a BBC micro or something similar. It had a monochrome display and ran I don't know what. I can vagely remember some sort of little pen thing as well. Had a little dot matrix printer hooked up as well that ran on the paper that feeds through with the holes on the sides. Ah, them were the days

The whole Ubuntu / Deain / Linux thing confuses me. Personally, I think there should be 4 distributions:

    Desktop
    Server
    Hardened Security
    Vulnerability testing

K.I.S.S - Keep it simple, stupid.

I just want to build this to get a handle on the vital aspects of linux and make a customised one for at home. Got any tips off the top of your head?
