    Unhappy ATI fglrx dual monitor woes



    I have a dual monitor setup with a 1600x1050 widescreen LCD and a 1280x1024 normal LCD. It's successfully installed and setup the latest ATI fglrx drivers and are currently using the "Big Desktop" setting in the amdcccle control panel with gnome. DRI works properly, but the resolution is stuck at 1280x1024 for both monitors, leading to a stretched resolution on the wide panel.

    I'd really like the widescreen to use it's native resolution though and currently it doesn't offer any benefit over using a normal 17' LCD. If anyone could help with getting the ATI fglrx driver to use different resolutions on dual monitors I would appreciate it, thank you.

    I have tried to use the ati driver that comes with xorg, but getting the two mointors to work properly didn't work well; xinerama kept crashing X and there was no acceleration.

    After looking into the issue more I found that it may have to do with EDID auto-modes. Following instructions I found online on how to define your own modeline, I looked in my X log and created the modlines, adding them to a new xorg.conf file:

    This still doesn't work though, and it actually makes the machine unusable, the LCDs flash up and will turn on and off, eventually staying on but showing nothing. The keyboard is unresponsive and the only way I can access the machine is through SSH. When I do this and look at the Xorg log it looks like it crashed:

    I don't know if you got this fixed but it can work. I have it running with a slight problem but I am sure you will take my slight problem over the stretched wide screen. here is my xorg.conf. I generated it as a big desktop using

    The problem I am having is that my 1280x1024 desktop is displaying to big...well my background is bigger that the desktop. and i notice that the lower right corner of the screen falls outside the monitor by a few inches. Maybe the resolution is wrong...funny thing is when i maximize a window over on that monitor it fills out correctly...go figure...:S

    Thanks for the update, I actually got my hand on an nvidia card which worked a lot better than the ATI. I also found that Optiplex 755s can have an issue with 64-bit software, 4GB of memory, and a PCI-E videocard that causes them to act strangely. Updating the BIOS to A08 fixed these issues however.

    In the end I recommend NVIDIA cards for this type of dual monitor multi-resolution setup. Once I installed the driver from nvidia.com and the BIOS update it auto-detected the correct resolutions and they worked properly the first time I loaded X. Excellent job by the NVIDIA Linux driver team.

    Congrats on gettign that up. The Nvidia cards are definitely a lot better under linux. I tried for about 3-4 days before i got waht i wanted from ATI. Ans what I did was all work arounds to get the effects I wanted. Thus note to self is next machine make sure I get NVidia!..
