installed debian ... now what
I have just installed debian on an old notebook, so i can teach myself linux ,knoppix and ubuntu wont load on this machine ??. anyway what do i do at the command line just after login i thought there is some sort of desktop like knoppix, but i cant get past the command line $
can some one help ...... cheers

If you haven't installed a desktop such as KDE or Gnome, you might need to do that first. If you've already done so, entering the startx command might get the GUI started for you.oz

i thought the desktop was on the image ?? i d/l cd1 from debian site should i d/l gnome ?

If you have a broadband internet connection I would recommend using the net install version of the debian installer. That will install gnome and all the necessary packages to get you started.

I too would recommend going with the debian netinstall because it's quick and easy, and you wind up with a lean system consisting of only what you really want/need on your machine.

Debian first CD has Gnome Desktop Environment and GUI will work on installing from first CD only. If you have good internet connection then go for net install CD as suggested by other members.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
