    apt network usage

I'm on a small LAN with an ADSL router for Internet access. When I use apt to download new packages the internet connection for all the computers on the network slows down to a crawl even though the apt download is only at ~15kb/s and our connection can handle a lot more.

    Thanks,
    Dom.

    Strange one.

Try another repository. There are lots of repos available than the default one and run apt-get update and then apt-get install 'blah'

Post the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list file here.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I used the US Debian http site first then used netselect which gave ftp.ticklers.org the best rating so I use that now. Every one I've tried gives about 15kb/s downloads and has the same affect on the network.
