    SSH Dynamic Proxy Issue

    Hi There,

this problem has been bugging me for ages, I am running Debain on a ARM based NSLU2 which I want to set up as a proxy server. I often use windows machines so I am using putty to SSH in.

I have samba installed and subversion for source control. I can tunnel in and use samba and subversion fine, However I also want Dynamic port forwarding on port 8080 to allow more secure web browsing when using wireless networks.

I have created the D8080 port in putty I open the connection and log in I also set up IE or Firefox to use a proxy server on port (localhost) 8080 but nothing happens when i try to browse the web.

    Anyone got any ideas?

My slug (NSLU2) can see the internet fine I can use lynx during the session to browse and that is also fine. just not from the client using the 8080 tunnel.

    Cheers

    Ian

    Update !!
I have just installed Squid on my NSLU2 , and setup port forwarding from L3128 to 127.0.0.1:3128 and configured ie for a proxy on LocalHost:3128 and it works a charm so I don't know what I am doing wrong here , I don't really want to use squid as a long term solution as its probably a bit heavy for my ARM system with 32mb ram. Does this give anyone any more clues as to why the standard socks proxy that SSH creates with not work with dynamic port forwarding
