New alsa version messed up sound

Everything was ok when using alsa version 1.0.15 but after updating to 1.0.16 the right speaker (external) started producing nothing but hissing sounds while the other one is still fine. When using OSS, the sound is ok. Is there a way to fix this problem (needless to say, i guess, reinstalling or adjusting volume settings did not help) or downgrade to previous alsa version? I'm a new debian user and help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks

You may have already tried this, but the only thing I can think of is there being an issue with your mixer (e.g. kmix or wmix, etc.).

    Good luck
