Can't change the resolution

My monitor is a plug and play kind i have 1gig ram
1/40 gig and 1/200gig hard drives
amd atholon cpu

my problem is i only get the option to make the resolution up to 640x480 from 640x480. so yeh, other than that i like debian a lot since i switched from kubuntu (it had a lot of quirks) but im new to this linux learning cycle and would just like a helping hand or someone knowledgeable enough to answer my question, which is how do i get it to 1024x768 without blowing anything up or reinstalling. if you can please just copypasta the file code and insert it in another message and some help full steps.

Hi and Welcome !!

First of all, create a backup copy of xorg.conf. If anything goes wrong, replace new copy with back up.

Have you installed ATI proprietary Driver?
Try using Driver "vesa" instead of "ati". vesa driver doesn't support 3D effects. Install ATI driver for better performance.
