Compress dd output before it is written?

    Hi all,

I just installed DSL on a 20gb external drive I had lying around which works great, and here's what I want to use it for:

I have a PC with a 40GB harddrive, but only about 8gb is used. I want to boot it from the DSL drive, and use dd to make an exact clone of the 40GB drive and save it. However, the output would take up 40GB unless I compress it. Is there a way to compress what dd is outputting before it's written do the disk, apart from using zfs?
