    Configuring soundcard in etch

    Hi,
    I'd installed debian etch a few days ago...and the problem is i cant hear any sound because alsa was unable to detect my soundcard... the kernel version is 2.6 and alsa version is 1.0.13. my soundcard is realtek alc883... i cant use internet in linux because my connection is a usb dialup...
    i downloaded the new alsa 1.0.16 ( downloaded in xp n transferred it thru a pendrive)...but i have no idea how to install it.. i read about some ./configure thing but i'm totally new to this.... please help...

    Hi, maybe you should first get your internet working.

    Sound is going to be difficult, many people still have problems with the "intel high definition audio", you are better off with some older hardware.

    It is a good idea to get the newest alsa version, but to compile it you need a lot more software, I just googled something: How To Compile Linux Software With Debian Linux

    Another possibility: the realtek website offers linux drivers:
    Realtek
    But I have no idea if this is going to work...
