    Question [SOLVED] ram type

    Hello,
I'm running debian etch40r3 on a dell, about 10 yearsold. I want to install more memory, I know I have 128m, but I don't know what type. Can I take it out and go to the store and they'll know what I need. Or is there a tool in debian to determine what type ie.. ram.. dram..? Is this what I need, what part of it? Thanks jeff p.

I Googled "Intel Corporation 8245 845" and the Intel data sheet for that board says it accepts DDR200 or DDR266 dual-data rate ram, with a maximum of 2GB. You'll have a bit of trouble finding that speed of RAM in retail stores these days as it's a bit old. I would recommend online sites like Newegg.com.

Here's link to the data sheet. It's on page 16.

Intel 845 Chipset: Memory Controller Hub (MCH) For DDR Datasheet

Also, just do you know what you're looking for, DDR200 is also called PC1700, whereas DDR266 is called PC2100. Make sure that if this system is a laptop you get the SO-DIMM and if it's a desktop you get the regular DIMM (it's a longer chip).

    Smile thanks

Thanks moe, that was just the page I was looking for, should have gone to Intel in the first place. I found a stick from a local run store for 20$ and It made a big difference, opening programs, browser, girlfriend can play pogo games now with java applets not freezing, though things can get just a bit sticky. I've got another problem with google/lynx, But I want to look around the forums a bit and post in the correct area. I also want to introduce myself in the lounge before asking for more help.Anyway thanks a lot.

Glad to be of help. It's amazing what some extra RAM can do to pep up an old computer.
