    error at start up

ok first of all to be honest i'm new to linux, and I though that Linux could go for years without crashing not like Microsoft but I guess I was wrong

the 2nd restart I had, it gives me an error with my file system, then does a scan up to 100% after thats done it gives me this message

/dev/sda3: UNEXPECTED INCONSISTENCY; RUN fsck MANUALLY.
    (i.e., without -a or -p options)
fsck died with exit status 4
    failed (code 4.)

then after that I can do control-d and that restarts but still gives me the same message.

So i'm guessing I have to run a fsck manually, but how?

..hmm, I would have thought you had two options:
    control-d
    or
type in the root user password

The second option would have dropped you to the command prompt where you can run fschk
