nvidia driver problem
Hi everyone
I am new to Linux, and even though I managed to get my nvidia 8800 gts (kind of ) working, I cannot get its full potential.
I am stuck on 24 bit depth and a resolution of 1280 x 1024
I downloaded the file NVIDIA-Linux-x86-169.12-pkg, and installed using sh, but I cannot get more than 24 bits and 1280 x 1024 pixels
any ideas, please?

Whats the maximum resolution that the monitor supports? AFAIK on Linux, a depth of 24 is the same as 32 in Windows. "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" should help reconfigure your graphics settings. Make sure you back up /etc/X11/xorg.conf first.

Hi
The maximum resolution is 1600 x 1024, but when I select it, I don't see the whole desktop: just the half right side
Also, what do you mean about 24 bits in linux being the same than 32 in windows? how is the alpha channel managed?
Thanks

So have you tried reconfiguring the card using "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg"? I will look for the article about 24 vs 32 bits on Linux and post back once I've found it. In the mean time, search on google for "xorg+24+vs+32+bit+color" and you should get some articles that explain this issue.

Hi daark child
yes, I have tried dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg, and after spending a lot of time going through all the options, now the x mode doesnt even start, I mean, when I reboot the computer, it starts in text mode, saying that the graphic card doesn not have 24 bit depth
I know that the nvidia geforce 8800 can handle 24 bits very well, so I must be doing something wrong...
Any ideas, please?

Try to reconfigure X Server through dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg command again and select supported values only.
Post the contents of /etc/X11/xorg.conf file here, if possible. It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
