    Linux mint celena to Elyssa

    Hello,
I am using Linux Celena for a few weeks now (it was not clear which distro I downloaded then and it became Celena instead of Debian) and there's a newer version out. I am a new bee in Linux land and I was thinking: Is it possible to install this new distro like an upgrade or something? Or do I loose everything on my Linux hard drive including my documents, and installed programm's? I hope someone can tell me a bit more.

the best thing to do (as good practice) is to have either 2 seperate drives or 2 seperate partitions. that way you can keep your important stuff on the seperate drive/partition and when you reinstall your data is still on another drive.

    reinstall

So I have to reinstall all the programms I use with Linux untill now? I can write the data on an external HD. (but the little things I know is that Linux has made a separate partition for personal data on 1 drive but I'm not shure).

if you are going from one distro to another, yes you will probably need to reinstall. That would be like me trying to upgrade my debian install to ubuntu, even though they are both debian or debian based, it doesn't mean I can just upgrade from one to the other. they are still different.

but to go from one version of a distro to another you can probably just upgrade. I am not familiar enough with linux mint but it should be just change the entries in /etc/apt/sources.list from celena to elyssa and then
    Code:
    apt-get update
    apt-get upgrade
    apt-get dist-upgrade
but thats just a guess, it might be better answered here Linux Mint Forums • Index page

    ooh and I thought

Well, and I thought that in the Linux Mint series, you got a version linke CELENA and when this version is developed it on a certain point became DEBIAN and now there is ELYSSA and the most recent version, but it does not work that way? (just like in hurricanes the are working by alphabetic order.)

    way out of my league

    jledhead,

I think better not upgrading over an older version. When I have time I'll download the new Ellysa for new installation. I'm not good enough to understand what i'm doing in Linux when it comes down using the terminal screen.
And thank you for your help.
BTW as I look around a bit in Linux world I see there still are lots of people
who want to help other people just for the good feeling and the fun...Just great
