That's interesting, what step requires original keyboard? BTW, you can configure Apple bootloader to boot from the CD by default.

i got a lot of conflicting button combinations when asking for help and some of them required the function key, and obviously the layout is different on a non apple keyboard. it wasnt a drama as i quite liked OSX so i just used that

IMO OSX is the best OS for these old Mac's, I tried GeeXboX once on mine and it crashed, probably because it was compiled for better CPU than my old 333 MHz RISC. Although it was claimed to work on all Mac's. BTW, I paid $12 for original keyboard on eBay.

I have heard lots about replacing the OS, and everyone else seems to think Linux as it's way faster (especially me as that's what I'm used to).

So I'm going to try the CD firmware from Apple's website as I tried others but they were either too new for the Mac or not quite the right model.

The firmware does not work, as it already has the new one. Unless anybody else has any smart ideas, I think it's a lost cause. I could always use it for a thin client, I guess...
