<0> Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init!

Upon starting up my system (Debian etch) I received a long list of integers and messages, ending with:

<0> Kernel Panic - not syncing: Attempting to kill init!

I restarted, and now everything seems fine. Stupidly, I didn't write down any of the integers and messages, because I reasoned they must be retrievable now, from a log file or the like.

My kernel version is 2.6.18-6-686 .

I'm quite a newb, and so I have no idea what caused this problem, or how to diagnose it, or fix it.
Any help would be appreciated !

    thanks

    Hi and Welcome !

There could be a lot of reasons for this. I would suggest you to boot up in Rescue Mode and run fsck on each Linux partition.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
