    Text files - types

I have recently started usuing debian in small way. yet I came against a problem. I wish to make multiple changes to text files(actually html files). I found a simple program on debian. It however seemsto mash up text files. It changes the text type file to a different type(UTF8 ). It changes some of the text on these files.

Is there a multiple search and replace program that wilol do the job better. Thats really all thats stopping me using linux consistently

You could have a look at sed and awk. They're a little difficult to master, but they're the classic text manipulation programs.
