    Screen freezes or goes fuzzy

My screen has recently began to break, with varying degrees of severity. From freezing but still allowing me to wiggle the mouse, to freezing entirely, to just going fuzzy with sweeping lines (like a tv when not tuned it).
The only real suggestions I've been able to find are that my graphics drivers may be incorrect. I have a ATI Radeon Sapphire 9550 256mb, and I've just installed the propriety drivers from the repositories, but the problem hasn't been solved.

What should my next step be?

    did you update your xorg.conf?
just installing the driver means nothing.

use aticonfig to correctly set up your video adapter

I configured the drivers - the problem doesn't seem to be recurring.
