LITE-ON not recognized as a writing device

    Hello, folks!

I have an Asus Eee PC preloaded with Linux. I have plugged in an external Lite-On DVD/RW (DX-20A3H) that recognizes any RW disc I pop in as a read-only drive in File Manager. However, I would REALLY like its burning functionality. K3B nor ImgBurn could find it as a writing device when it works perfectly fine as a plug and play in XP.

I am hoping this isn't a driver issue as it didn't come with a device installation software nor could I find access to one when I Googled.

Kindly bear with me, I am a Linux n00b. Any suggestions to resolve my problem would be much appreciated.

Make sure that you are in the "plugdev" "usb" "cdrw" and possibly the "cd" groups. Some may be there, some may not, but it sounds like you aren't in the correct group for the cdrw.

Just because you use a distribution, doesn't mean everyone uses the same one.

Are those folders? I don't see them. Right now, the discs are automatically detected as /media/DVD A DH20A3H. What steps do I take to "change group"?

I am not too familiar with whatever distro the EEEpc uses, but you should be able to look through the menus and find a user or group administration program.

    Mine is preloaded with Xandros.

On the terminal, I type "groups" and get this:
user dialout cdrom floppy audio video plugdev users lpadmin fuse
    now what?

Also, in the Device Control Center, it is found under CD-ROM/DVD drives, Is DVDRW: yes, Driver loaded: no.

Lite-On seems intent in getting me to install the Nero bundle which "is an important influential factor", but that is probably a contracted obligation with Nero. However, through Wine, the Nero setup "is interrupted" everytime, and I'd have to click Finish. <-- Makes me wonder if the setup is dependent on any *.msi files Xandros nor Wine could read.

    Try this as root:

    Code:
    gpasswd -a cdrw
and see what that gets you. I am not familiar with Xandros sorry, but my external lite-on dvdrw works as expected when I plug it in.

Drivers could be a problem. I don't know how to fix drivers though. Does anyone?
