Problem With Themes in Debian Linux

Greetings to all of the gurus and know-what's out there.

I've encountered a really weird problem with Debian. I'm using a rather fresh installation of Debian. Whenever I go to the Themes manager to change the way the system looks, the computer freezes up and the program starts working.

Meanwhile, the Processor jumps up to 100%.

I can't switch out themes, install other themes, anything. The computer is still working, but the program goes to hell.

I've just installed Debian on this machine today, and I've updated the system. I even went into the Package Manager to install a lot of the Gnome programs in an effort to fix the problem in the hopes that something in the other programs would help. Nothing.

Can someone tell me what I should try next? Has anyone ever seen this problem?

    Thank you!

Are you using KDE or GNOME? I've not had any problems on my Debian machine with either.

    I'm using Gnome.

It's weird. At first, everything was working. Debian Linux was just humming along.

Then, I had that name problem, so I reinstalled Debian Linux, and now it has that problem.

Everything else works. But once I go to Themes, my processor goes nuts
(100%) and the program just freezes up. It won't let me change the Themes, add themes or anything. If I try to scroll with it, the window blurs.

I've reinstalled Debian Linux two times now, but it keeps happening.

    I'm not really sure.

DId you check your Xorg video driver? Check the file /etc/xorg.conf and see what driver you're using for the display.

Are you using the vesa driver? sometimes using the generic vesa driver can give problems with desktop effects/themes as it tends to use the CPU rather than the graphics card capabilities for the effects.

maybe if you start top (or any other processes monitor) before you call the themes manager, it'll give you a clue which process exactly is consuming all that cpu. might be the theme manager or something else dependent on it.
