    Beginning Debian help

I have been using Ubuntu on my old computer, but recently I bought a new dual core AMD motherboard, and couldn't find a Ubuntu version that worked. So I decided to install Debian, but I couldn't figure out which version or which disk (there are a ton) was right for my computer. Now I know that the first disk installs the basics, and the rest install the drivers and software and such, but I don't want to have to download a bunch of ISOs and waste discs. Having only the basic Debian (only terminal command line) would not be a problem normally for me, but the Debian install was not able to find a driver for my ethernet port. This is the problem.

I would like to know how to acquire a driver for my ethernet port that will install and run in Debian. Then I would like to know how to install it with a USB flash drive, using only the command line. Can anyone help me out?

Which version of Debian did you try?
What ethernet card do you have?

To get help you need to provide *relevant* information.

I don't use leading edge hardware and so probably won't be able to help, but someone else may.

You can't find an Ubuntu LiveCD that works? Some questions for you then:

I'm assuming this is a 64 bit system, correct?

Did you try THIS LiveCD installer? ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-amd64.iso

Yea, I should use that. But is there anyway of finding out what type of ethernet port you have without having the documentation for the motherboard? That ISO is exactly what I need, lol.

Wow, forget this entire thread now. The installation disc for Ubuntu AMD64 had the correct driver for my Ethernet port.
