    modem setup debian 'etch'

I have just loaded Debian 4 on a new computer. I am trying to set up the modem. The modem is a Creative Modem Blaster DE5621 external modem connected to the first serial port. Debian is up and running. I can go to 'terminal' and type an echo command but the response is that it is not found. I don't know anything about where to start. I have printed out a lengthy article, "Debian Linux Modem Configuration" and done as many things described in it as I could do. Thank you for all help.

It's been many years since I last setup a dial-up account but I do remember it being fairly simple to do, and it was pretty much like doing it in Windows if I remember correctly. That said, I think you can use PPP to set it all up.

If you are running Gnome, this is the app that should help you to get it going:

Debian -- Details of package gnome-ppp in etch

If it's already installed, look for it in your applications menu.

If you are running KDE, it's called Kppp:

    The KPPP Handbook

    Hope this helps.

    modem setup in Debian

Thank you for your response. My modem quit working on the linux computer and the windows computer so I had to get a new modem. (I got the linux computer to recognize it once.) Then the old one started working again. I don't have the new modem recognized yet. There is a linux driver for it but I have do do some more studying to understand how to install it.
