I get similar errors if I attempt to use vlc instead of mplayer, and yes, I've tried numerous different parameters and arguments to mplayer ... to no avail.

It is truly hilarious that a DVD I have bought legally has numerous issues with its basic functionality, not to mention the issues with making a backup of it -- while a divx never has a single issue. Jesus Christ.

Do you remember if you ever solved this problem? I've got the
exact same problem (same error messages).

    Smile libdvdcss

    Hi,
I'm really not sure this will solve your problem but the only "bug" I encoutered playing legal DVD's with either mplayer or Totem was that libdvdcss was not installed.
I can't remember the error messages I got and it may not be related to your problem but you should first try to install libdvdcss (available as a Debian package).
This library enables you to decrypt DVD and it's not provided with Debian because of legal reasons.
Hope this will help you, cheers!

    Kurt
