    dpkg-reconfigu(t)e xserver-xorg
    startx
    Shouldn't that "t" be an "r"?

I didn't realize that ATI made USB host controllers.
I thought they just did GPU's.

Anyway, I don't suppose you've resolved your issues?

If worse comes to worse, you should be able to get X going by choosing the VESA module.

    That's how I did it.
However, I'm running it in a virtual machine with MacOSX tiger as the host because Linux won't work as my main OS since most commercial design apps don't run on it.
So it's not my main OS, and I'm only using it for testing and learning purposes.

Using the VESA module won't give you accelerated graphics, but it will allow you to run X.
