Adding a USB TrekStor hard drive

    Hi

I have just purchased a TrekStore USB hard drive. The PC sees the drive but get the following message when I try to access it:

libhal-storage.c 1401 : info: called libhal_free_dbus_error but dbuserror was not set.

process 4074: applications must not close shared connections - see dbus_connection_close() docs. this is a bug in the application.

    error: could not execute pmount

Does anyone have a idea as to what I should do?

    Thanks

    Michael

    What did you do?
    Just plug the drive in?

Did you edit your fstab, and assign a mount point?
Did you research the error message?

Can you run dmesg directly after plugging the drive in and post back the output? Also run /sbin/fdisk -l (that's a lowercase L) while the drive is plugged in.

No I have not researched the error. However, I seem to think the problem is to do with the PC than the USB hard drive and is related to allowing the operating system to see and access the drive.

    Typing in the commnad:
    /sbin/fdisk -l

    had no effect

The contents of the dmesg file is:

    --text starts
    mrj2@devpc:~$ dmesag
    bash: dmesag: command not found

    I take it that it's a 160GB drive, right?
It's using SCSI emulation, and the drive name that Linux has it at is "sda".
Which means you should be able to find it in /dev/sda.
You should be able to edit your fstab and assign a mount point such as /mnt/sda1.

    Have you tried this yet?
One other question, was the drive already formatted before you plugged it into the linux box?
If so, what filesystem is on it?

If it's not formatted, you won't be able to access it until it is.
Have you tried to get to it with cfdisk?

Appologies for delay in replying, I have been ill.

I have not tried editting the fstab yet. I have done this with Fedora as root user can log on from the gui. My debian does not allow root to log on from the gui; and I haven't found how to do this from the dos prompt yet.

The file format is vfat (is this another name for NTFS?). I seem to think this will be a read-only, but this is fine for the purpose I will be using it for. I can write to it via an XP box.

The disk is already formatted. I seem to think if I reformat using anything other than NTFS the disk might become useless.

I have just tried using Disks Manager and located /dev/sda1 and it is the usb disk drive. Also, Disks Manager allows me to view files on the disk. Perhaps this is a long way round, but for a newbie to Debian, it works.

Thanks for the lead. I seem to think this problem has been resolved.
