Boot up problems in Arch 2008.06

Hello all just a quick question. As the title implies I'm sort-of stuck. I've done the wiki and google but no answer. I installed Arch from cd, rebooted and received this:
    """
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev/hda3' unknown
ERROR: root fs cannot be detected. Try using the rootfstype= kernel parameter.
Root device '/dev/hda3' doesn't exist, attempting to create it
ERROR: Failed to parse block device name for '/dev'hda3'
ERROR: Unable to create/detect root device '/dev/hda3'
Dropping to a recovery shell...type 'exit' to reboot
NOTE: klibc contains no 'ls' binary, use 'echo *' instead

If the device '/dev/hda3' gets created while you are here, try adding 'rootdelay=8' or higher to the kernel command-line.
    """
Yes, I am a "newbie" to a degree. It must be something I'm not including or seeing in the setup process but after several times I continue to receive this same message, any help would be appreciated.

When you boot from the CD do you get /dev/hda3 or /dev/sda3 listed ... also have you tried the rootdelay=8 added to the kernel line ?

My understanding is Arch is a rolling release system so just install from any source that works and issue pacman -Syu will bring things upto date. I downloaded an image a while ago and would use that for a fresh install today. Is there a particular reason for trying a later version?

Apparently there are a few things I did not do correctly during setup after watching the install on youtube. After watching, I became stuck on something: when you are in package selection, "Yes" to pacman cache, THEN when prompted for [ ] base-devel -

I am unable to actually "select" the option to include it..
Is it ctrl "something" or shift "something"? Pressing enter just selects OK without selecting base-devel so.....Not sure where to go or how to phrase such a question in google. I feel as if this is one of those "It told me to press any key, where's the dang "any" key on this here key boArd?" moments...

I think you use the arrow keys to select the package you want and pressing the space bar toggles selection on and off ...

That did indeed work. A new problem, not on the boards: I use nano, go to system config, hit enter and the screen is black with all options at the bottom like they should be. But there is nothing to modify or change, its just blank. I exited that and just to look I went to filesystem mountpoints to see what was in there and again nothing. It was like that for all options on that page, just emptiness. Could it be a bad copy of Arch?
