getting modem recognized and installed Debian 4.04

I have Debian 4.04 installed. I do not see anywhere that the modem is recognized.
I have a Zoom model 3095 which has instructions for installation on a linux computer. I can't follow the instructions to get it installed. I need explicit commands and methods.
    It says "for debian enter
    dpkg -i dgcmodem_i386.deb

    I get the following:
    dpkg: error processing dgcmodem_i386.deb
(--install): cannot access archive: no such file or directory Errors were encountered whils processing: dgcmodem_i386.deb

Following that instruction it says "At the prompt, enter the Linux source build directory that matches your running kernel. and if necessary, run dgcconfig to complete the installation.
I do not know what most of that means.

You need the actual package for your modem first. If it came with an install CD, chances are it's there. If not, check the manufacturer's website.

dpkg is the package manager and that command simply installs packages... the package will need to be in the same directory for that to work.

I apologize. It did come with a cd. I run the program that was supposed to install it. now it is out there but still not available. It may be that it just needs to be mounted. I have not figured that out yet. I guess I need to find the directory name and do a mount routing like I did for the hard drive. Thanks for reply. I will work on it a little more and let you know later. Marshall
