Apt-Get Error & Refuse Connection in Browser

    Greetings,

I wear many hats in my organization so I am not an expert with Linux. I can usually hold my own but I've got an issue I can't see to find a resolution on.

I have two Debian machines that I built about three months ago. They are both DNS servers (named ns1 and ns2) - at that point they were both identical and functioning perfectly. Then about a month ago I had a request to build a reverse-proxy for an inside web server.

Instead of purchasing more hardware for this I thought I could just use one of the DNS servers. So I came acrossed POUND. Got it installed and configured and it works great. I tested DNS to ensure it was still working as it should and everything seemed to be running great. So I buttoned everything up and it's been working just fine (still does). However:

Earlier this week I needed to update DNS to add some sub-domains for other websites. I never did install SSH so I went to get that accomplished. Went into the server room, hooked up a monitor, ran the command to install ssh and I kept getting "111 connection refused"... I also get a ("xxx.xxx" refused the connection) while trying to browse the web (though internal websites work).

I've searched for the problem/solution to the error. Most suggest it is a proxy environment setting or the like. I don't believe this is the issue in my case (at least not the same as others were describing - and I'm not using a proxy [other than POUND but that isn't really a proxy server]).

It seems that I've got some kind of routing issue or something like that perhaps. I can ping google.com just fine. traceroute times out but mtr works fine (and I never really trust traceroute).

The other machine that doesn't have POUND on it works normally so this seems to be the only difference. But even after stopping POUND or preventing from loading at bootup I still have this issue. If I recall when I innitially installed POUND it required some other things (OpenSSL and something else) so maybe the issue is somehow related to that.

Sorry for the long post - I guess I just need some help on how to troubleshoot this or what I can do to try and narrow it down some. Or maybe others have run into the issue and know of a solution.

    Thanks in advance.

Anyone? Just need some tips on how to troubleshoot this situation. Where should I start or look into.

    Thanks.
