Unhappy [SOLVED] Not able to login

Hi.. I'm a linux newbie. I use Debian Etch with Gnome.

Today morning I was trying to configure wvdial for using my mobile phone as a modem to browse the Web..

Today evening, suddenly the computer hanged.. So i restarted (using the switch in the CPU).. After restarting, I'm not able to login at all...

After entering the username and password, a window appears with following message:

    Code:
I could not start your session and so I have started the failsafe xterm session. Windows now have focus only if you have your cursor above them. To get out of this mode type 'exit' in the window in the upper left corner
I am not able to login as root and other user accounts too...

While restarting, I saw some messages like "shared libraries missing", etc.. (I couldn't note them exactly)

Here is the a part of contents of /var/log/messages:
(I dont know whether this would be helpful)

Is system booting up in Command Line Mode?
Highlight Fedora title in GRUB Menu and press 'e'. Select kernel line and press 'e' again. Type single and hit Enter key. Press 'b'.

    e -- select kernel line -- e -- type single -- hit Enter key -- b.

Does it boot up and drop you at command line prompt?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I used the single user mode entry in GRUB. It shows the command line prompt.. What should I do now?

Note: Even in the usual (graphical) mode, after the window which says "I could not start your session..." appears, the terminal appears and I am able to execute commands...

Rename .gnome and .gconfd folders of your home folder.
    Code:
    mv .gnome .gnome.bak
    mv .gconfd .gconfd.bak
Log out and login back or reboot machine.

This is what I get on executing above commands...

    Code:

Something has gone wrong with /dev/sda11 partition.
Boot up in single user mode and run fsck.
    Code:
    fsck.ext3 /dev/sda11
