    Blank screen after logout

I've found threads on other forum sites re: this issue; nothing there seems to work for me so thought I would try here.

I'm using Etch on an AMD64 machine. Everything works fine until I try to log-out. Screen goes black and have to reboot to get back to a log-in prompt. I'm using an evga GeForce 8800 GTS card w/ nvidia chipset. Default Etch drivers. Any help would be appreciated.

    thx

Did you try switching to other virtual consoles during the blank (atl+F2, alt+F3, etc)(ctrl+alt+F# in X)? Does this problem happen at the console, with no X window system display server running? Maybe your system is trying to load kdm/gdm/xdm and the server isn't (re)starting. I'm sure you tried pressing [enter] a couple of times after waiting a minute or maybe ctrl+c or [esc].

You can change your "run levels" by typing " init # " at the command prompt; # being 0 - 6. 3 is usually the default run level. You can look in /etc/rc3.d on debian systems to see what processes are started by init (S##scripts). The problem could also be in your ~/.bash_logout script. Maybe post your /etc/inittab file for review.

    Thanks,

tried all that nothing worked. I fixed the issue, though, by upgrading from etch to lenny. Now all is well. Sometimes the laziest way is the best way. We'll see...
