Post Debian newbie.. need some common answers

    Hi
I was using Ubuntu 8.10 2 days ago. Now, a friend told me that use Debian. So I installed Debian 4.0 from DVD.

Now come to my problems :

    1) How to install Firefox 3.0.x or any fork of this ? There is auto update in Ubuntu for this. But the Debian comes with Iceweasel 2.0.x (Firefox 2.0.x)

    2) I want to enable multimedia codecs to play DVDs and AVIs (Xvid DivX etc.) How do I do this ?

    3) How to install latest versions of all softwares? Like I want to install GNOME 2.26 but after full upgrade there is still GNOME 2.14.3. I want to also install KDE4 for testing.

If I were you, I would have installed Debian 5 (Lenny). The release that you installed is marked as stable, so most of the packages will not be updated to new releases except to fix bugs. Debian Lenny is stll undergoing testing but from my experience it seems a lot more stable than the "stable" releases of some distros. i am not sure f KDE4 is available in Debian Lenny, so ts something you may need to investigate before installing.

You don't have to wait until its released. Its already quite stable and there are many people out there using it.
