edit: I searched around more and found this:
Then enter a new unix passwordCode:sudo passwd root
+ password makes you rootCode:su

in Debian thare is no root user only type
#sudo su -
enter your passwd & you become a root user simple !!

Real Debian does have a root password which you create during installation. But what this guy is using is a Debian derivative. A basic rule of thumb is that if root is allowed to login, you'll be asked to set a root password when you install; if you aren't, then this distro uses sudo like *buntu and Knoppix.
