more installation issues

so i switched to lenny it auto configures network fine. so with all versions of linux it wont format as ext3 but will format as XFS and reiserFS. i follow up with selecting packages (desktop enviroment & standard system) after it aquires all the files and get to usally between 85-95% complete it pops up that a step on install has failed. any ideas why or how to fix?
