    Code:
    apt-get clean
this will clean out the apt cache directory (lenny packages and all), so maybe run that prior to dist-upgrade

    Code:
    apt-get autoremove
will remove packages no longer needed

but neither have to be ran. I don't think debian is known for leaving trash lying around the filesystem. maybe others have some opinions.
