I run Ubuntu 8.04 so forgive me if I steer you wrong. First off I installed VLC as my media player from Synaptic Package manager, but I am using the Gnome desktop. Then I went to my Places>Computer>DVDRW and clicked Properties. Then I selected Open With and selected VLC from the list. Movies play for me OK , with everything you have installed so far. I hope that is of some help to you.

VLC supports most of the media formats. Does it throw any error message?
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.
