    Question Firefox for Debian?

Hey everyone. I just became a new Debian user. I am in college. I do allot of homework online. Iceweasel is not supported on a few of the sites I must access. So, I chose to install Firefox. But, every time I try to install it, the page does not load. Any help?

Iceweasel is Firefox. Same code, same versions - different name.

In 2006 the Debian Project subsequently rebranded the Mozilla Firefox program,[3] and other software released by Mozilla, so that Debian could continue to distribute the software with modifications permitted, without being bound by the use of trademark requirements that the Mozilla Foundation had required.

In my case all the sites I need open but sometimes complain that the browser is not supported and suggests to use IE, FF or Chrome. But still works. Mostly webpages/servers look for or track specific names and folder and conf files etc I guess. So complain. But as the code is (almost!?) same, they work.

You can fake any browser by altering the user agent string
How To Change User Agent String

It is sad that this is necessary in the first place, though. Why is it of any particular concern to the webmaster which browser I use? The w3c maintains standards for a reason

Unfortunately, with the differences in rendering engines, some browsers can do certain things and some can't. Look at the "Made for IE" paradigm of the 1990's for example.

Not all browsers stick to standards .

Thats the irony! Society sides with such standards-disrespecting (unethical) elements and scorn at standards-complaint (ethical) elements.

    Hi there,

I've been using iceweasel for about 24 hours now, and just before I came to this forum I googled the same issue, found this article about altering the user agent string link on another site, and have followed the instructions and it now works with great success. Another thing you can try is get the source for firefox, compile it yourself then install it AFTER installing iceweasel. You do have to mod a few conf files and mess about with it a bit. I tried it in all honesty and had a half working version of both browsers in the end! But it is possible, if you have more time and earthly knowledge that I!

Why not just download Firefox from Mozilla | Firefox web browser & Thunderbird email client and install it?

If you go to Mozillas website for Firefox there is no install (or pkg) for Debian Linux. Iceweasel is Firefox, it's just been rebranded and reskinned with a few mild changes by debian to make it more there own.

Rather than Thunderbird, there is icedove for your mail and RSS and rather than (whatever the calender app was called) Debian has Iceowl instead. Both these programs are exactly the same as their widespread counterparts.

Theres also Iceape as well (whatever it is or does I'm yet to descover).

I know Iceweasel is Mozilla Firefox but it is working wear, i used openSUSE some time ago and i always install Mozilla from source than the one given by the distro.

I tried to do it in debian lenny amd64 and with no success, it does not show web pages it is always in blank and Iceweasel is not so fast as the one i install under openSuse. So for that reason i am still trying to install Mozilla from source. But i have not have success to do it.
