There's only handful of ways to run Microsoft Windows software in Linux. The main (and free of charge) way is to use a program called WINE. Some companies take the source code from WINE, alter it, and sell a specialized version for certain people (games emphasis, office software emphasis). These products are CodeWeavers Crossover and TransGaming Cedega. Those last two products are not free of charge, but do offer a few nicer things like GUI configuration/installation tools and a direct way to ask for your favorite application to get supported.
Visual Basic is a very Windows-specific platform, and unless you're doing VB.net you're not going to find a perfect solution for running it in Linux. The closest native thing we have is the Mono Project, which is a clone of the .NET framework.
If you have the option, I very strongly recommend you do your Visual Basic development in a Microsoft Windows environment. It's the only sure-fire way to get what you want.Registered Linux user #270181

I don't know. I try to avoid programming languages that are operating-system-specific. If your VB program relies on something like an Access database you might not be able to use Mono. Is there no way for you to get access to a Microsoft Windows computer for this work?

one problem you may have a problem with is mono probably won't like vbscript. I looked at hosting a classic asp site I have and putting it on a linux machine under apache, everything worked except the vbscript part, all the asp code and javascript stuff worked
taken from the the mono faqThose languages are simpler to implement due to the restricted dependency on external COM objects, but there are no plans at this point to implement them by the Mono team.
FAQ: Technical - Mono
also, if its real simple, there is always vi, nano, gedit, kate,........

@ techieMoe thanks again.
I tried to dual boot my system - i installed windows xp sp3 first then on another partition i installed gOS.
at start up i would get a screen with the choice of xp and gOS and i could boot into any system i wished. Now after the downloading the initial updates in gOS the screen comes with the choice between ubuntu 8.04 (as far as i remember ) and Xp but the key board does not work at that moment ( which is not a hardware problem -i have changed key board and tried) and i cant choose which operating system to boot in. So it directly boot into gOS.
Now firstly I love using gOS and hate to use an all windows system again.
secondly i could delete both of them and install them afresh but if the problem arises again it will be expensive for me to update gOS again as i use a limited internet connection. Moreover if the booting problem persists it will be of no good. With the data in the system I cannot also just format.
If you can tell me an easy solution to my problem at the time of booting ,I wont mind using windows for small purposes- So how can i use my keyboard again to choose the operating system to boot in ?
@jledhead thanks for the information.
regards to both.
