cannot hear any sound
i am new to using linux. i have installed gOS linux recently on my system. everything is working fine including the updates, videos and graphics but i cannot hear any sound. my pc configuration is intel dual coree 3.4 ghz, 3 gb ddr2 667 ram, intel 945 gcl (integrated sound driver by sigmatel), 160 gb 7200 rpm hard drive( seagate), nvidia 6600 LE 512 ddr2, creative 2.1. i have tried changing the default sound driver from intel hda alsa mixer which is the default as sound driver in the system to sigamel oss mixer but that proved to be of no use actually. i have also connected a few of my friend' pc s to my system to find out any problems if there is with the sound box but there isn't any.the speaker is just working fine with those systems. but when it comes to my own system i cannot hear any sound.
i am desperately looking for solutions for this problem. any help will be appreciated.

have you tried running alsaconf? (you'll probably need to be root for that to work).

you could try.
1. make sure sound is not muted.
or
2. update alsa
or
3. mark for reinstall alsa

"root" is the user who has permission to do everything*. In order to run alsaconf, you should open a terminal window (comes in many forms - you might have Konsole, xterm, aterm, rxvt, or something else - basically it's a window with a command prompt), then type
su
and hit enter. It will ask for the root password, which you should have set up when you installed the operating system. When you type the password in, you wont see any characters (not even *s) coming up on screen, but if you type it in right then press enter you will become root. Then type
alsaconf
and press enter. It will ask you a few questions, but they're all fairly self-explanatory.

once you are root. You need to make sure alsaconf is on your system. You do this by typing alsaconf at the command line. You need to have a terminal window open. If it is installed you will see a screen that lists all your sound hardware. Scroll to your sound card and push enter. It will configure your card. You then need to type alsamixer to turn up the volume.
