    You can dist-upgrade from one Debian release t another e.g.
    Code:
    aptitude full-upgrade
    You first have to edit your /etc/apt/sources.list and change every instance of etch to lenny. You data should remain intact and only packages upgraded.

    I used aptitude for my Etch->Lenny upgrade and I lost all the programs I had installed separately with apt-get. I had a highly personalised set up for Etch, but I couldn't be bothered to do the work all over again so I've settled for a more standardised one for Lenny. But I remember being furious at the time.
