    Hello,

    I am having problems with a mad wifi access point, I am not running hostap at this time. I can connect to the ap from my clients but I can't surf, I am bringing up ath0 manually also entering my essid via iwconfig for ath0 manually.

    Hello and welcome.
    Have you tried running dhcp on ath0?
    maybe dhclient or dhcpcd??

    Thanks,

    If you are using a GUI like NetworkManager, it should do it for you.

    dhcpcd

    Hello,

    Mike I am working on this remotely I am not home to test yet. This is what I get when I issue dhcpcd

    tom:/etc/network# dhcpcd ath0
    err, ath0: timed out
    warn, ath0: using IPV4LL address 169.254.154.17
    dhcpcd.sh: interface ath0 has been configured with new IP=169.254.154.17

    tom:/etc/network# ifconfig
    ath0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 06:40:96:b2:4a:8e
    inet addr:169.254.154.17 Bcast:169.254.255.255 Mask:255.255.0.0
    inet6 addr: fe80::440:96ff:feb2:4a8e/64 Scope:Link
    UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
    RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
    TX packets:2161 errors:0 dropped:3 overruns:0 carrier:0
    collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
    RX bytes:0 (0.0 B) TX bytes:432453 (422.3 KiB)

    Do I need to configure a dhcp server also? Dhcpcd assigned a different ip and netmask from what I am using on my network. I have a centos box running as a nat going to a cisco 2600 switch. This is a debian box I am trying to configure as an ap on the network to give you a bit of a back ground.

    Thanks again,

    Keith

    DHCP Server

    Hello,

    I have set up dhcp3-server, since both eth0 and ath0 are bridged do I need to assign the dhcp server to a specific interface? This is my dhcpd.conf

    tom:/etc/dhcp3# cat dhcpd.conf
    ddns-update-style none;

    option domain-name-servers 145.253.2.75, 193.174.32.18;

    default-lease-time 86400;
    max-lease-time 604800;

    authoritative;

    subnet 192.168.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
    range 192.168.2.200 192.168.2.229;
    option subnet-mask 255.255.255.0;
    option broadcast-address 192.168.2.255;
    option routers 192.168.2.1;
    }

    Thanks again,

    Keith

    Fixed

    Thanks Mike you made my day for pointing me in the right direction. I never ran DHCP all my ip's were set static in the interfaces. I setup a dhcp server and resolved some rules with iptables, I have been up and working secure with hostap since. Sorry I did not reply faster, been tied up with work... I just wanted to say thank you!!
