[SOLVED] Brand new to Linux... Need basic info and help in installing Debian Lenny

    Hello All,

I really need some help... I am trying to learn more about asterisk... so i decided to try and set up an asterisk server and use a linux server... So I bought a dell server without an OS and now just stumped like a dead tree...

I went to the site for Debian and it says that it needs 31 cds or 5 dvds... is this all really necessary? Where is the best place to download it from... on the Debian site they give info on dual boot... is there any info on "dummies for installing Lenny" directions available somewhere...

Any and all help will be greatly appreciated...

    Thanks in advance.

You don't require full set. Thats sheer waste of time and bandwidth unless you want to sell the CDs/DVDs. First DVD is all you need for most practical purposes.

You can consider doint a net install. The size of the CD is ~180MB. Once it sets up the basic installation, you can to 'apt-get install' to install whatever package you want. You need a good internet connection for it though. Installing Debian GNU/Linux via the Internet

It sounds like maybe a bad burn to disk. Check this HowTo for all the steps needed to properly burn an ISO file to disk as an image:

Check out the Debian Lenny "Perfect Server" guide.

It's not specific to what you're looking for, but the beginning section on installation and basic setup is quite good.
