Wireless, java and flash issue on Lenny with Dell Vostro 1000 i386
Hello All,
Once again I have an issue and I am trying to figure out why wireless is not working... and on top of that I can't get java or flash running either... I love to use ninjavideo.net to watch my tv shows and this is driving me crazy...
Computer: Dell Vostro 1000
OS: Lenny (stable) - i386 net install
Issue:
1. Can not view/play any flash or java applets... i.e. can not view the online word in NinjaVideo.net - NinjaVideo Helper Beta 0.3.9
2. Can not view any flash media
3. When trying to view youtube.com videos there are serious lags when it plays but usually I just hear audio with video frame sits still
Please help.
Thanks in advance.Last edited by zayapac; 07-28-2009 at 10:24 PM. Reason: Better information

Read this link and post the requested info.
Please also read the link in my signature on how to ask questions. Just saying, "Hey, this doesn't work. Please help." gives no useful information and like as not, your posts will be ignored.

Point well taken on the question part... thought I had entered the info, but must have only been in my mind...

More info would still be useful, such as which browser you're using and what plugins you have installed.
Your original post said you were having wireless troubles, by which I took to mean, you were unable to connect to the internet and/or your wireless wasn't showing up in whatever network manager you are using, but now it sounds like you're able to connect fine, and your trouble is only with flash and java. Is that correct?
I assume you are using firefox (or, since it's Debian, iceweasel). If so, typein the address bar and take a look at the plugins you have installed. My first guess is that you either do not have the proprietary adobe flash plugin installed and are using gnash or swfdec, or you have a combination of two or more of those plugins installed and it is causing conflicts. If the latter, uninstall gnash and/or swfdec and stick with the adobe flash plugin. I hate that it's necessary, but in my experience I've never had success with the open source flash players.Code:about:plugins
For java, what plugin did you install, if any? There is the official proprietary java plugin and there is an opensource java plugin, called icedtea6. The links will take you to the Debian package site. You will need to have "non-free" enabled in your repository to install the sun-java6-plugin package through apt.

Btw, I am really new to linux and you seem quite knowledgable... I was wondering if you could also suggest some sites/books or other materials that i can understand linux better... as I would also like to eventually put together a guide for noobs like me as I learn things...
Thanks.
Oh yeah, I use both iceweasel and and epiphany... but prefer iceweasel...

I'm really not that knowledgeable. I've been using linux for just shy of two years as my only desktop OS, and you pick up things. Most of what I've learned is from installing Arch on a number of different computers, and figuring out how to fix any troubles and what packages provide the functionality I want.
The Ubuntu Community Documentation has pretty good documentation for new people, that is mostly applicable to any distro, and very helpful for Debian based distros.
The Arch Wiki is also very good, though slightly more advanced. Obviously, a lot of it is specific to Arch, but much of it is general to linux as well.
For the wireless, we still need the info requested in the link I posted in my first reply.
I mistyped above. Rather than about:config, I meant about:plugins.
This is what my java section looks like.

You have swfdec installed for flash. As I said before, this sadly does not work well yet. Uninstall it and install the adobe flashplugin.
You're using the icedtea6 plugin for java. There are some apps that do not work quite right with the open source java plugin. Uninstall it and install the sun-java6-plugin.
Please reread my previous posts, as they contain links to everything you need to get these working.
Again, in my first reply I posted a link that will tell you how to get the information we need to troubleshoot the wireless.
EDIT: I checked ninjavideo as it works fine with the sun-java6-plugin for me.
